I examine the once popular claim according to which interpersonal comparisons of welfare are necessary for social choice. side with current choice theorists in emphasizing that, on a narrow construal, this necessity is refuted beyond appeal. However, depart from opinion presently prevailing theory highlighting that broader proves not only compatible with, but even comforted by, state field. submit all all, most accurate philosophical assessment consists flatly rejecting claim, accepting it suitably revised form.
